Common Causes of Stained Teeth

Wondering how teeth get stained? There are a number of factors and causes.

Types of Staining

There are three different types of tooth staining: intrinsic, extrinsic, and age-related.

Intrinsic Tooth Staining

Intrinsic staining is when the stain is the result of something happening inside the tooth. Intrinsic stains usually appear greyish in colour and are resistant to over-the-counter whitening products. Common causes of intrinsic staining include tooth decay, tooth trauma or injury, certain medications, or exposure to too much fluoride.

Extrinsic Tooth Staining

Extrinsic staining is when the stains are only on the tooth enamel, not the inner part of the tooth. These types of stains are easier to get rid of. Common causes of extrinsic tooth stains include tobacco use and consuming certain foods and beverages.

Age-Related Tooth Staining

As we age, our tooth enamel naturally wears away, resulting in a yellowish discoloration of the teeth. Talk to your dentist about the best ways to strengthen your enamel as you age.

Common Causes of Tooth Discolouration

Tobacco Use

Smoking cigarettes and using other tobacco products such as chewing tobacco is a very common cause of noticeable tooth staining.

Poor Dental Hygiene

A poor dental hygiene routine will result in a buildup of plaque and yellowish staining of the teeth. To prevent this, brush your teeth at least twice a day, floss once a day, and visit your dentist for regular checkups.

Certain Medications

Some medications, including certain antibiotics, can result in tooth staining.

Diet

Specific foods and beverages can trigger tooth staining. Foods with dark pigments, tannins, or high levels of acidity are the most likely to cause staining. The following are some of the most common dietary causes of stained teeth:

  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Red wine
  • Tomato-based sauces
  • Blueberries
  • Blackberries
  • Cola
  • Soy sauce
  • Balsamic vinegar
